Home Textile Guide: How to Measure Rustic (Grommet) Drapery Panels?

One of the most effective ways to add timeless elegance to living spaces is to adorn windows with the right textile products. Especially in recent years, the rising trend of rustic rod pocket curtains (grommet drapery panels) has become indispensable for classic home decor with their flowing drape and natural feel.

However, the secret to a perfect look is not just choosing the right fabric, but also taking precise measurements. As Pyramid Home atelier, we have prepared a step-by-step grommet drapery panel measurement guide to help you find the most suitable measurements for your home.

1. How to Measure Width?

The biggest mistake made with grommet curtains is taking measurements based only on the window frame. For a proper and flowing look, the reference point should be the length of the rustic rod (curtain rod).

  • Measure the Rod: Extend your tape measure from one end of the rustic rod to the other (excluding the finials). For example, your measurement is 200 cm.

  • Add Fullness (Pleat) Allowance: Grommet curtains lose their elegant wavy form when hung flat. For a rich and full appearance, you should multiply your rod measurement by at least 2.

  • Result: For a 200 cm rod, you need a total of 400 cm of fabric width. If you are using two panels, one for the right and one for the left, each panel should be 200 cm wide.

2. How to Measure Length (Height)?

The length of your curtain determines the overall character of the room. When taking measurements, the starting point of the tape measure should always be the top of the rustic rod, not the window sill.

  • Standard Hem (Off the Floor): Extend the tape measure from the top of the rod to the floor. For example, let the distance from the rod to the floor be 260 cm. If you don't want your curtain to gather dust on the floor, subtract 2 cm from this measurement. Your ideal curtain length will be 258 cm.

  • "Old Money" Pooled Look (Puddling): If you want to create a more luxurious, classic, and grand living room atmosphere, curtains gently pooling on the floor is a wonderful detail. For this look, add between 5 and 10 cm to your measurement from the rod to the floor (e.g., 260 cm). The length you should order should be between 265 cm - 270 cm.

  • Mind the Radiators: If there is a radiator below your curtain, finish the curtain length 3 cm above the radiator to avoid obstructing heat flow.

Pyramid Home Tips

For rustic curtains, the weight and texture of the fabric are as important as the measurements. Sturdy fabrics like natural linen, when combined with grommet rings, create a perfect wave.

  • A Small but Vital Detail: Removable Rod or Finials When you want to clean or change your grommet drapery panels, you will need to slide the rings off the rod. When choosing a rustic curtain rod system for your home, you should ensure it has one of these two practical mounting types:

    • Open (U-shaped) Support Brackets: If the top of the brackets mounted to the wall or ceiling is open, you can lift the rod with the curtain in one go without removing the finials. This is the most practical usage.
